Circus Themed 1st Birthday Party

Spring is upon us which is the time of year that I associate with birthdays. All of my siblings and I have March, April and May birthdays and the tradition continues in my own family now. I struggled with choosing a theme for my son’s first birthday because let’s be honest- first birthday parties are more for the moms and dads! Babies don’t really care what color their paper plates are. I perused Pinterest for months leading up to the party, and eventually stumbled upon the Fisher-Price circus themed party decorations. I loved the bright colors and the adorable animals.

It was easy to find matching tableware, straws and napkins at Party City and Target. The snacks were easy- I stocked up on kettle corn from BJ’s and found the popcorn tubs at Dollar Tree.

I made the First Birthday chalkboard sign on PowerPoint. I printed it at home and framed it in a cheap white frame. Much cheaper than Etsy!

Along the back side of this photo (above) you can see a bit of my “Baby Buffet.” Since many of the guests were under 2, I decided to do a baby buffet with juice boxes, apple sauce pouches, cheese sticks, cucumber slices, mini cottage cheeses and YoBaby yogurts. All of the blue serving dishes were found at Dollar Tree!

For lunch we served a chicken souvlaki salad bar (pictured above). It was SO easy and such a hit. My aunt used to do this at all of her family parties and it never disappoints. I’ll post a recipe for the chicken soon.

For the cupcakes I baked my tried and true vanilla cupcake recipe. I made a separate first birthday smash cake using a banana cake recipe (pictured above), but you can easily substitute applesauce or plain yogurt for eggs in a traditional cake recipe (our pediatrician did not suggest eggs before one year).
